ST. PAUL, Minn.

The federal government is projecting Minnesota’s corn crop will reach a record 1.25 billion bushels this year, slightly better than last year.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture on Thursday also projected Minnesota’s average corn yield at about 178 bushels an acre, a four-bushel increase over 2009.

The USDA also estimates that Minnesota farmers will harvest 326 million bushels of soybeans, another record, with average yields of 44 bushels per acre.

Plenty of rain and warm temperatures are boosting yields across the country. Minnesota’s crop conditions are rated the best in the country.

The USDA is projecting record national harvests for both corn and soybeans, too. And with grain prices on the rise, Wells Fargo agricultural economist Michael Swanson says the outlook for Minnesota farm income is “very positive.”
